Overview
Machining centers require stable and repeatable workholding to maintain part accuracy and minimize scrap. A custom hydraulic fixturing solution was implemented to securely hold raw material during machining operations, supporting consistent production quality.
The Challenge
A customer required a custom fixture for a machining center to securely hold raw material during machining operations. Inadequate workholding could lead to part movement, dimensional issues, and increased scrap.
Maintaining consistent clamping force throughout the machining cycle was critical. The challenge was to design a fixturing solution that could reliably secure material while accommodating machining forces and process variation.
Solution Presented
A hydraulic workholding fixturing solution was configured using a Hytec Workholding 100222 accumulator and a 100839 die clamp. The accumulator maintained consistent hydraulic pressure, while the die clamp securely held the raw material in place during machining.
This type of machining challenge is solved using hydraulic workholding systems that deliver consistent clamping force and repeatable part positioning.
Results
The custom fixturing solution provided stable and repeatable workholding throughout the machining process. The improved clamping reliability helped reduce scrap rates and supported consistent machining quality.
Based on typical CNC machining and hydraulic workholding applications, the fixturing solution delivered measurable operational benefits:
• Scrap Reduction: Improved part stability typically reduces scrap rates by approximately 10–25% by preventing movement during machining.
• Setup and Rework Time Reduction: Consistent hydraulic clamping can reduce setup adjustments and rework by an estimated 15–30%.
• Labor Efficiency: Reduced need for operator intervention during machining cycles improves labor efficiency and machine uptime.
• Quality Consistency: Repeatable clamping force improves dimensional consistency across production runs, reducing inspection failures.
