How Bolting Systems TWLC Torque Wrench Helps Accelerate O&G Turnarounds

Overview

Industrial turnaround maintenance often requires high-force torquing in confined spaces where conventional tools cannot fit. A hydraulic torque wrench system was used to safely and accurately service flange gaskets, ensuring controlled torque application and joint integrity.

The Challenge

A turnaround service required a hydraulic torque wrench capable of fitting into restricted flange areas while still delivering the torque needed to service gaskets reliably.

Limited clearance around the flange made it difficult to apply torque safely and consistently using standard tools. Maintaining gasket integrity required precise torque control without compromising worker safety.

Solution Presented

A hydraulic torquing solution was supplied using a TWSL4 hydraulic torque wrench powered by an RWP55-BS pump. The low-profile wrench design allowed access in confined spaces, while the pump provided controlled hydraulic pressure for accurate and repeatable torque application.

Results

The hydraulic torque wrench system enabled safe, efficient gasket servicing during the turnaround. High-force torque was applied accurately within the confined space, helping ensure proper flange sealing and reliable operation.

Based on typical industrial bolting operations and maintenance turnarounds, the hydraulic torque wrench system delivered the following measurable benefits:
• Bolting Time Reduction: Estimated 30–50% reduction in bolting time compared to manual wrenching in confined spaces.
• Labor Efficiency: Reduced physical effort allowed one operator to complete tasks that previously required multiple personnel or extended shifts.
• Downtime Reduction: Faster flange assembly shortened maintenance windows, helping reduce overall equipment downtime.
• Rework Reduction: Controlled, repeatable torque application reduced the likelihood of under- or over-torqued fasteners and associated rework.
• Safety Improvement: Reduced operator fatigue and controlled torque application lowered the risk of strain injuries and bolting-related incidents.

Other Applications

• Flange assembly and gasket service
• Turnaround and shutdown maintenance
• Confined-space bolting operations
• Energy and process industry maintenance
