Overview

Rail operators require dependable level crossing barriers to protect vehicles and pedestrians at road and pathway crossings. The level crossing barrier machine system was implemented to deliver consistent operation, high visibility, and long-term reliability across multiple rail environments. 

The Challenge

A rail operator required level crossing barriers suitable for a range of road and pedestrian crossing applications. Ranging in lengths from 3.6 m to 9.1 m and compliant with all applicable local regulations, the barriers needed to operate reliably in varying environmental conditions while integrating seamlessly with existing rail signaling systems.
 
Level crossings present significant safety and operational risks to rail operators, employees, and the general public, if barrier systems fail to operate reliably and consistently. The equipment can be subject to vandalism, misuse, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical wear, as well as environmental exposure. Frequent operating cycles can further increase maintenance demands and the risk of service-related interruptions for both road and rail users.

Solution Presented

An MK2 BR843 level crossing barrier system was supplied to meet the application requirements. The system was designed to provide dependable operation, clear visibility, and compatibility with rail signaling systems, helping to ensure safe and controlled access during train movements.
This rail safety challenge is addressed through purpose-built level crossing barrier systems engineered for reliable actuation and long-term durability, offering a service life of up to 20 years or 1 million operating cycles in increasingly demanding rail and road environments.

Results

The installed level crossing barriers delivered consistent, reliable performance across the required network crossing locations. The solution supported improved safety for vehicles and pedestrians while meeting the operational needs of the rail operator. Based on typical rail infrastructure and automated barrier deployments, the solution delivered measurable operational benefits:
