Overview
Reliable rail track switching is critical to safe and efficient rail operations. To address this requirement, a rail customer implemented the MK3 Clamplock Point Operating Equipment to reduce installation and maintenance demands while improving the long-term reliability and performance of track infrastructure.
The Challenge
A rail customer was seeking a new Clamplock point operating system capable of reducing installation and maintenance time, improving safety, and extending the mean time between service-affecting failures to 10+ years. Existing switch systems required frequent maintenance and manual intervention and were susceptible to common failure modes that reduced reliability and increased operational costs.
Traditional and incumbent point operating systems contained known wear components and failure modes that increased maintenance and renewal requirements. Frequent service intervals reduced operational availability and increased lifecycle costs for the rail operator.
Solution Presented
The MK3 Clamplock Point Operating Equipment was designed and approved for use to address specific customer pain points and operational concerns. The system eliminated common failure modes associated with previous designs and incorporated innovative features intended to simplify installation and maintenance while improving the long-term durability and reliability of switch and crossing (S&C) applications.
Results
Implementation of the MK3 Clamplock improved the reliability of rail track switch and crossing operations. Reduced installation time, lower maintenance requirements, and fewer failure events helped extend service intervals and asset life while improving overall system availability and reducing whole-life costs for the rail operator.
While site-specific performance metrics vary, the MK3 Clamplock point operating equipment was developed to reduce installation and maintenance time by eliminating known failure points present in earlier designs and applications. This supports more predictable rail operations and reduces the maintenance burden over the lifecycle of the switching system.
