Using a Stone DC Hydraulic Power Unit for a Portable Bale Lifting Mechanism

Overview

Agricultural operations require efficient and safe handling of round bales in the field. A portable bale spike lifting mechanism powered by a compact DC hydraulic power unit was implemented to provide controlled lifting, secure load holding, and smooth lowering without reliance on tractor hydraulics. 

The Challenge

An agricultural customer required a lightweight, self-contained hydraulic solution to operate a two-tine bale spike. The system needed to lift, hold, and lower round bales safely while allowing the bale spike to be mounted on a pickup or utility vehicle.
 
Traditional bale handling methods often rely on tractor hydraulics or manual intervention, limiting flexibility and increasing handling time. Uncontrolled lowering and inconsistent load holding also introduced safety risks during bale transport and placement.

Solution Presented

A Stone DC-70BS power unit was integrated into the bale spike mechanism. The unit incorporates a 2-position, 4-way cartridge valve and double pilot-operated check valves, enabling controlled lifting, positive load holding, and smooth, controlled lowering of round bales.
This type of agricultural handling challenge is solved using portable DC hydraulic power units with integrated load-holding valves to deliver independent, safe lifting capability in the field.

Results

The portable bale spike lifting mechanism improved daily handling efficiency and reduced operator effort. Independent DC hydraulic power eliminated dependence on tractor hydraulics and enabled safer, more consistent bale handling across multiple vehicles.
 
Based on typical agricultural handling practices, the DC-powered bale spike system delivered measurable operational benefits:

• Annual Labor Savings: Assuming a $30–$45 hourly labor rate and 50 operating weeks per year, estimated savings range from $5,000 to $7,500 per unit annually.
• Equipment Utilization: Increased flexibility allowed bale handling on pickups or utility vehicles, improving equipment availability by an estimated 20–40%.
